J.W. Olson
Colorado Landscape Painter

Artist Biography
Born in Chicago, Illinois, Jack discovered art at an early age. His mother said “when he was 3 or 4 years old he lie on the floor and draw the characters in the Sunday funny papers.” When Jack was 15 his family moved to Colorado where he discovered the beauty of the Rocky Mountains and their surroundings. His love of the Colorado landscape, aspen trees and cowboys is evident in his current paintings.

Jack has taken workshops and studied with noted artists he admires, but being a mostly self-taught artist, Jack has had to work diligently to elevate his work to its current level. He states “I am not anywhere near where I would like to be, as an artist. Art is a never-ending struggle to improve, no matter how much people admire your work; there is always an inner need to improve.

Jack worked in graphite and pastels for many years, also trying watercolors and acrylics. In 1980 he decided to try painting in oils, and immediately fell in love with the medium. In 1997 after 31 years as a Nabisco salesman, Jack and his wife Judy decided he should make the transition to become a full time artist. Since painting on a full time basis, Jack has accumulated many adoring collectors. His many gallery owners have only good things to say about him and his work.

The artist is a member of the Oil Painters of America (OPA) and participates in many art shows throughout the country. His paintings hang in private and corporate collections throughout the contiguous United States and Hawaii. One of his paintings is displayed in the Colorado Governor’s mansion, the site of his first one man show. He also has many paintings that have been published in limited edition giclee prints stretched on canvas.

Jack and Judy, his main inspiration and critic, have lived in close proximity to his beloved Rocky Mountains, and ranches for the past 50 years. His many ranch owners and cowboy friends have influenced him to paint modern day western scenes. Jack works at ranches during branding and round-ups to gain first hand accurate knowledge for his paintings. His many collectors feel that he paints with exceptional feelings, sensitivity and realism.
