Insight for Buying Art

Art Business News ran an article in their February issue entitled "When is a Print Better than an Original?" When gallery owners were asked which was a "better value/investment" most said the only art worth collecting is original artwork. And, generally, those who claim to collect original artwork are purchasing works by local and regional artists who may be unknown nationally/internationally. The article also hinted that prints were worth purchasing particularly when they were by well-known artists.

While the article was accurate in many respects, it neglected to point out that not all prints are equal.

If you are on a limited budget and can not afford an original piece, then the next best option is to have a gicl?e print of the artwork on canvas. A gicl?e print on canvas may also be enhanced by the artist, which can add to the textural aesthetics of the piece. With the new digital photography processes and computer printing on high resolution digital printers you can have a print on canvas that you can enjoy for many years. A gicl?e print on paper, although cheaper than a canvas print, may fade over time.

Another factor for consideration concerning prints is the "edition." A limited edition has a designated number of prints. Typically, the smaller number in the edition, the more coveted the print. An open edition can be printed without limitation so your print may be less valuable.

One final caveat: in regard to all of the above, whenever you purchase art - whether it's a painting, sculpture, blown glass, original or print, buy it because you enjoy it as a work of art and you will enjoy living with the creative expression of others.
